Back in 2011, Blue Oval came up with the idea of F-Series hybrid pickup truck. A decade later the idea is becoming a reality. The 2021 Ford F-250 Hybrid will arrive at some point in 2020. Ten years ago it was hard to transform an idea into a final product, but now everything makes perfect sense. Ford’s plan to hybridize almost all of the SUVs and pickup trucks already started. After the F-150 Hybrid, the F-250 model will get its own hybrid variant.
The 2020 F-250 is coming with a redesign. Knowing that 2021 model will arrive with only one significant changes and it is a hybrid drivetrain. It means the exterior and interior will suffer minor changes only. F-250 is an all-around player, it offers a diesel engine and the Raptor version could arrive as well. Roomy cabin, aggressive exterior design, and powerful performance are guaranteed.
2021 Ford F-250 Hybrid Powertrain
The upcoming 2021 Ford F-250 Hybrid was already announced, but not by the Blue Oval carmaker. A Boston-based company “XL Hybrids” said that both the F-150 and F-250 pickup trucks will get a hybrid system. According to the same company, the rest of the F-Series will also get the same system, but not instantly. The production of the F-250 Hybrid model will start in March next year. Ford said it will be the first heavy-duty F-series pickup available to the customers.
XL Hybrids will install the system that will be compatible with all sort of body styles and configurations. For now, we only know that the 15-kilowatt-hour battery pack will be available. The battery pack will sit under the bed and the electric motor is between the rear axle and transmission. We still don’t know anything about the electric motor and paired engine. The most likely outcome is a smaller output with the supercharger.
Fuel Economy
According to XL Hybrids, fuel efficiency will see a 25 percent increase. Moreover, a 50 percent boost to the effective fuel economy is promised. However, those numbers are available for the F-150 model. The 2021 Ford F-250 Hybrid comes with no fuel economy rating. EPA is not offering those figures because they are not required for the heavy-duty vehicles. Surely, we can expect a huge increase in this department.
Towing Capabilities
The plug-in hybrid system won’t affect the towing and hauling ability. At least not in a negative way. Knowing that the tow rating will stay the same or we can see a slight increase. 15,000 pounds sounds just right. The hybrid system adds all-wheel-drive setup as well which will allow a full range of utility systems.
2021 Ford F-250 Hybrid Competition
Each year bring more and more competitors in the race for the best pickup truck. Some pickups are offering the best fuel economy, some are more comfortable and some are more powerful. When it comes to hybrid pickup trucks, the 2021 Ford F-250 Hybrid should dominate the heavy-duty segment. All of the leading carmakers are slowly entering the race of the hybrid pickup trucks. General Motors are not offering hybrid system above the mid-size sedan at the moment, but that could change. Moreover, Cadillac and GMC are surely planning to enter the race.
