2019 Ford Expedition Changes – Diesel, Hybrid, King Ranch Trim

The last edition of the Expedition SUV presented the brand-new aluminum body. Innovations are what keep Ford’s vehicle at the top of every segment. Of course, reliability and durability are next best things. The biggest news for 2019 Ford Expedition could be a diesel engine. With it, the crossover can boost towing capacity. At the same time, diesel unit on Ford Expedition adds more miles per gallon.

With a stronger engine, the 2019 Ford Expedition is more capable for an off-road drive. Also, many tuning companies are offering lift kit for the crossover, but then buyers are losing warranty. The Platinum trim level was the most interesting since it brought luxurious features and premium materials. Nevertheless, the 2019 Expedition could introduce King Ranch trim, which we are seeing for trucks.

2019 Ford Expedition Engine Specs

The 2019 Ford Expedition will use a proven 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. Its output depends on trim level. Base models can achieve 375 hp, while boosters gain additional 25 hp for Platinum model. A V-6 unit also records 470 or 480 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can opt for the 4×4 drive system, while 4×2 is set by default.

Towing Capacity and Gas Mileage

When we take a size and curb weight of the full-size crossover, we can consider its fuel economy as generous. The 2019 Ford Expedition can return 24 miles per gallon on the highway. Well, some trims with higher output will drop it to 21 mpg, with 16 miles per gallon in urban driving. The new Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,500 pounds, properly equipped.

Diesel

One of the major additions for 2019 Ford Expedition could be a diesel drivetrain. Nevertheless, this unit is not official yet. But, since there are rumors, we must take it seriously and examine its foundations. The announcement of King Ranch trim means the SUV is following steps of Ford’s pickup trucks. At first place, that is F-150. Recently, this model got the diesel engine. So, Expedition crossover could be the next one to see this kind of drivetrain under its hood.

If the 2019 Ford Expedition borrows the unit from the truck, it will be a Powerstroke drivetrain capable to produce 250 horses. An off-road capability will take advantage of the 420-430 lb-ft of torque produced by a 3.0-liter diesel unit. Also, the towing capacity is about to jump with such drivetrain. Currently, the Expedition is offering 9,500 pounds of hauling power. With a diesel unit, the crossover will be one of the most potent in the segment. With some upgrades, it will come out with 15,000 pounds of towing capacity. In the base setup, the result is definitely going over 10k lbs.

Hybrid

While the diesel mill is possible for the next crossover, the hybrid version is less likely. However, stories about it can’t leave us cold. Ford is planning to electrify most of their vehicles, including many crossovers and even trucks. So, there won’t be a surprise to see Expedition with battery supporting the conventional engine. Unfortunately, the company plans to do it by 2023, and next season is too close to developing such drivetrain for the SUV.

2019 King Ranch Expedition

Another big news for 2019 Ford Expedition is King Ranch model. So far, the SUV is offered in two versions – regular and MAX. Both are coming in XLT trim as the base model and Limited edition as mid-range SUV. At the top of the class, we find Ford Expedition Platinum, with 22-inch wheels, panoramic roof, and higher outputs.

King Ranch will be just under the Platinum trim with a variety of features and equipment. However, the new version will lure the attention of fans and buyers, so we can’t wait to see what will it bring. Again, we can take a look at this trim level on the Ford F-150 truck and see what it could bring. Among many features, we will mention two-tone paintjob, unique bumpers’ colors, premium audio system, leather-trimmed seats, etc. Sync3 infotainment with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are going to be standard features for 2019 King Ranch Expedition.

2019 Ford Expedition Price and Release Date

Price could make difference when buyers are choosing 2019 Ford Expedition or similar models. The full-size crossover by the Blue Oval company is everything but cheap. Starting cost is already over $50,000, and that is for base XLT trim. Limited variations exceed $60k, and platinum $75,000 for MAX lineup.
